Understanding the Writing Process through
Walt Whitman's notebooks

Recommendations

Recommendations for Integration:
  • This inquiry-based RWLO can be used to demonstrate an authentic example of the writing process by having students discover how Whitman revised his works in either a Writing Composition / English or as primary source material in an American Literature / Poetry course to demonstrate how Walt Whitman refined and developed his ideas as he wrote.

Back-up:
  • Print-out all of the materials referenced in the Content Material section of this web site and provide sufficient copies to your students. At a minimum, each student should have their own copy of the student worksheet and could share copies of of Page 200 and Page 201 from Whitman's notebook and the poem "Quicksand Years".

(NOTE: the notebooks have been digitally archived by the Library of Congress
and can be located in the Thomas Biggs Harned Walt Whitman Collection)
