Understanding the Writing Process through
Walt Whitman's notebooks

This RWLO could be applied in the following courses: English Composition / Writing, American Literature, Poetry, and others. Specifically, this RWLO meets the following Language Arts course competencies (others are listed below):

  • Verify meanings of words by the author’s use of definition, restatement, example, comparison, contrast and cause and effect (1).
     
  • Demonstrate comprehension of print and electronic text by responding to questions (e.g., literal, inferential, evaluative and synthesizing) (1).
     
  • Utilize multiple sources pertaining to a singular topic to critique the various ways authors develop their ideas (e.g., treatment, scope and organization) (1).
     
  • Analyze how an author uses figurative language and literary techniques to shape plot and set meaning and critique an author’s style (1).
     
  • Understand how authors select and use an appropriate organizational structure to refine and develop ideas for writing (1).
     
  • Write responses to literature that provide an interpretation, recognize ambiguities, nuances and complexities and that understand the author’s use of stylistic devices and effects created (1).
